What Can Osteopathy Treat
This list is by no means exhaustive but it illustrates some of the more common conditions we treat.
Back pain and sciatica
Back pain is the most common problem that osteopaths deal with as it affects four out of five people in their lives. Often there is associated pain and discomfort in the legs, often referred to as sciatica or a 'trapped nerve.' Most cases, whilst very painful, respond very well to treatment, especially if seen promptly.
Headaches, neck and shoulder pain
These very common symptoms may be associated with stress, driving, desk work and a host of other activities and usually respond well to osteopathic treatment.
Joint and muscle strain
Osteopaths are commonly associated with treating back-pain but osteopathy can also be useful for joint and muscle strains in any part of the body such as frozen shoulder, tennis or golfer's elbow and other repetitive strain injuries.
Sports injuries
Osteopathic treatment can benefit sports men and women at all levels to help speed recovery from injury, restore normal function and prevent further injury. We treat injuries relating to golf, running, cycling, football, rugby and many other sports.
Before and after surgery
Treatment combined with exercise advice can help to maintain mobility, improve muscle strength and hence improve the outcome of orthopaedic operations, such as knee & hip replacement, and also help restore the body to normal activity after surgery.
Arthritis (osteoarthritis)
This is the result of wear and tear of the joints often associated with ageing or injury. Whilst the wear cannot be reversed, the function of the affected joints can be improved and therefore pain and discomfort reduced.
Back pain during pregnancy
The postural and weight changes associated with pregnancy often lead to back, neck, hip and leg pain and associated digestive and breathing discomfort. Gentle osteopathic treatment can provide great relief from all these symptoms.
Babies
Gentle osteopathic treatment can be particularly helpful for babies to help release any residual birth trauma. Osteopathy has proven helpful with feeding difficulties, sleeping problems and recurrent infections
